I’m at a party, but I don’t want to drink—now what?

Preparing

  • Decide which parties you’re comfortable attending.
  • Bring a friend who supports your decision not to drink or a friend who also doesn’t want to drink.

At the party

  • Know you aren’t alone in deciding not to drink.
  • Embrace the activities that don’t involve alcohol.
  • Talk with others — starting with a compliment helps!
  • If you start to feel anxious or overwhelmed it’s okay to take a break.

It’s okay to say no!

  • “No, but thanks!”
  • “I don’t want to drink tonight.”
  • “I’m the designated driver.”
  • “I have an early morning class tomorrow.”

Alcohol-free cocktails

Alcohol-free drinks can help you avoid peer pressure to drink alcohol since nobody else knows what’s in your cup.
